Replying to an un-starred question of Shri Pradip Kumar Varma, the Union Minister of State for Tribal Affairs Shri Durgadas Uikey stated in a written reply in Rajya Sabha that as of June, 2025, 51 Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRSs) are reported to be functional in the State of Jharkhand.
As reported by National Education Society for Tribal Students (NESTS), an autonomous body under Ministry of Tribal Affairs to plan, construct, establish, endow and administer the EMRS, a total number of 7550 students are enrolled in EMRSs during 2024-25 in Jharkhand.
Further, Department of Expenditure, Government of India, in Jan, 2023 has sanctioned a total of 38,480 teaching and non-teaching posts for Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRSs) across the country. As per the sanction, 52 teaching and non-teaching posts have been allocated for each EMRS. The recruitment is to be undertaken in a phased manner, aligned with the progress of school construction and their operationalization. Accordingly, the first phase of recruitment was undertaken by the NESTS for direct recruitment on 10,391 posts through the EMRS Staff Selection Exam (ESSE)-2023. The selected candidates have been posted during the academic year 2024–25. So far, a total of 9,075 posting orders, including 7,050 for teaching positions, have been issued, out of which, 147 teaching staff have been posted in the state of Jharkhand.
Under the new scheme of EMRS, 440 blocks were approved from across the country including the state of Jharkhand for establishment of Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRSs) in addition to existing 288 EMRSs approved under the Article 275(1) of the Constitution of India. Accordingly, in the state of Jharkhand total 91 EMRSs ( 68 under New Scheme and 23 under the Article 275(1) of the Constitution of India) have been approved.
