WHEF: World Hindu Economic Forum — The Root of Righteousness is Wealth

'Dharmasya moolam arthah' means the root of righteousness is wealth. The basis of “sukha” or all true pleasantness is “dharma” or righteous conduct. The basis of all “dharma” is “artha” or wealth. The basis of all “artha” is “Rajya” or the State. The basis for the stability of the State lies in control over the “indriya“ or sense faculties providing pleasure.

Introduction

The World Hindu Economic Forum (WHEF) brings together financially successful elements within Hindu society such as traders, bankers, technocrats, investors, industrialists, business persons, professionals, along with economists and thinkers, so that each group can share their business knowledge, experience, expertise and resources with their fellow brethren. We encourage, support and mentor budding Hindu entrepreneurs. The end goal is to generate surplus wealth and make society prosperous.

Today, while some economies are passing through a turbulent phase, many emerging economies are providing us great opportunities. The issue is how to leverage the global situation for collective growth. Hindus should cooperate and collaborate globally so that market access is facilitated amongst them. We need to create market access across geographic zones and countries, spreading from Auckland to Alaska and Oslo to Johannesburg, cutting across the entire globe. Similar cooperation can be envisaged in the area of capital, enabling availability of appropriately priced capital. Also, technologically savvy Hindus should be matched with those who can convert technical innovation into business with ideas, funds and market access.

VISION: Making Society Prosperous

MISSION: Creating and Sharing surplus Wealth ACTION Promoting Enterprise and Entrepreneurship PHILOSOPHY Dharmasya Moolam Arthah (Economy is the Strength) ~ Acharya Chanakya

Foundation

We Hindus know how to create wealth, and also freely share this knowledge. Our ancestors have expressed their wisdom in the Vedas “Sat Hasta Samahara, Sahastra Hasta Sankira”. It literally means “Create wealth with 100 hands and share it with 1000 hands”. Hindus contributed 35-49% of the world economy from the 1st to 15th century CE.

Hindu civilization was wealthy and prosperous. The magnificent monuments of past and present such as Harappa & Mohenjo-Daro, Lothal, Nalanda & Takshila University, Ayutthaya in Thailand, Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Prambanan & Borobudur in Indonesia, Wat Phu in Laos, My-son in Vietnam, Rameshwaram, Brihadeshwara and Meenakshi temples in Bharat etc, are ample evidence of the wealthy times. This prosperity was lost during the period of Islamic invasion, colonial rule and post Industrial Revolution.

Way Forward

The 21 st century economy is driven by knowledge and youth. With larger part of the Hindu population being youth, there is an inherent potential waiting to be unlocked. WHEF is that platform which will utilize this available potential to trigger the creation of surplus wealth.

The Economic boom of previous two decades followed by a recession of major economies has placed the entire world into turmoil. The responses to these challenges are complex and needs to be addressed outside the current institutional framework and mindsets. The world economic leadership is only researching and acting according to traditional wisdom, i.e. cost-cutting and protectionism. The endeavors designed for relative stability do not work in adverse times. It requires a new and creative response, which can propel creation of surplus wealth to rescue the world economy from its current crisis. WHEF’s present approach is based on the foundational wisdom in the Bhagwad Gita: “Think in future, for the future”.

The basic problems of the world today are hunger, poverty and illiteracy. These problems cannot be solved just by donations and charity. A growing population has growing needs, and these can be overcome only by creating surplus wealth and sharing this wealth to empower the masses, i.e. those at the bottom of the pyramid. WHEF is that step towards creating “That, which sustains” and eradicating hunger, poverty and illiteracy in the world.

The WHEF journey began in 2012 at Hong Kong, followed by successful annual forums in Bangkok 2013, New Delhi 2014, London 2015, and several regional forums along the way.

The World Hindu Economic Conference is being organized by the World Hindu Economic Forum. The primary theme of the Conference is to provide a framework for Hindus to be in the forefront of “Shaping the World Economy along with making Society Prosperous”. The global Hindu population is more than a billion strong, consisting of approximately one sixth of the world population. For the past thousand of years, Hindu society has sustained itself due to the previous efforts of prior generation of Hindus in creating a great surplus of wealth.

Economic historians have surmised that Hindu civilization contributed 35% of the world economy from the 1st to 15th century Common Era (CE); sharing of this wealth ensured a just and prosperous society. That prosperity was lost during the period of Islamic invasion, colonial rule and post Industrial Revolution. The world economy has changed a lot since the 1960s, with a greater emphasis on the creation of more open economic marketplace as well as transformations bought about by rapid technological advances that have led to greater interconnectivity of the world economy.

Individual Hindus have been able to take advantage of the situation by build vast business empires and becoming heads of many major corporations throughout the world. This impressive performance on individual basis has not translated to Hindu society on the whole making it prosperous.

Therefore, one of the primary goals of this conference is to provide a platform for the expertise and experience to be shared with a wide group of Hindus. The question is not only of financial capital alone, but also of bringing financially successful Hindus under one banner, which will lead to greater economic cooperation among Hindu entrepreneurs, creating the conditions necessary for the generation of surplus wealth.

“Success breeds Success” – the coming together of successful people will bring a positive energy and vision which will transform Hindu society.

Initiative

Hindu Economic Forum (HEF) (www.hindueconomy.org) brings together various elements within Hindu society such as industrialists, business persons, traders, bankers, technocrats, investors, professionals, economists, academicians and thinkers, so that each group can share their knowledge, experience, expertise and resources with their fellow brethren. We encourage, support and mentor budding Hindu entrepreneurs. The end goal is to make society prosperous.

Today, Bharat has the potential to emerge as a leading economic power, but there is a need to leverage the economic opportunities through collaboration and cooperation. Our ancestors have expressed their wisdom in the Vedas “Sat Hasta Samahara, Sahastra Hasta Sankira”, which means “Create wealth with 100 hands and share it with 1000 hands”. Taking inspiration from our ancient wisdom, our ancestors contributed 35% of the world economy from the 1st to 15th century; sharing of this wealth ensured a just and prosperous society. That prosperity was lost during the period of Islamic invasion, colonial rule and post Industrial Revolution.

We have two examples from recent years that show how communities and nations can regain their strength when they work with a spirit of cooperation and single-minded dedication. Jews rebuilt themselves in the 20th century, even after enduring the Holocaust, through networking, community support and organisation. Today, the Jewish community is an economic superpower of the world. Another example is of the Chinese. Today, China has become the second largest economy in the world, and by using their economic strength they are building their military and political strength.

Hindus need to strengthen the Hindu economy so as to shape the future of Hindu civilization. We Hindus want to live with dignity and respect, and we also want our Hindu civilization and society to be recognized and respected in the world. It is possible only if we achieve at least 16 % of the world GDP, proportionate to our population, in the next 15-20 years. When we achieve such economic strength, we will be able to fulfill the needs of our population and also acquire respect in the global community. To achieve this position, we need to create a world class business and economic platform where Hindus can cooperate and collaborate; a strong and sustainable institutional framework that will help and propel the Hindu economy to move forward and generate surplus wealth. Previous generations have suffered and have been disadvantaged as they did not have such a platform. Hindu Economic Forum is providing that platform so that future generations prosper and emerge strong.

HEF will be the organization under which chapters will be formed, providing Hindus a local platform in their city/region to meet, interact and collaborate; apart from the global virtual network that WHEF provides. If any query please contact us on [email protected]
