Padma Bhushan for Shibu Soren: Honour Amid BJP’s Political Self-Contradictions

BJP Govt. conferred Former Jharkhand CM Shibu Soren (Posthumous) with the Padma Bhushan after one and half year its submission of 'Tainted Ministers Memorandum' to the President of India. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha co-founder Shibu Soren passed away in Delhi on August 4, 2025, at the age of 81. Widely called as 'Dishom Guru' the former political leader had a controversial checkered political career.

The BJP-led Union Government’s decision to confer the Padma Bhushan posthumously on former Jharkhand Chief Minister and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) founder Shibu Soren has triggered intense political discussion across the country. The honour, one of India’s highest civilian awards, comes nearly one and a half years after a memorandum titled ‘Tainted Ministers’ was submitted to the President of India, raising questions about alleged impropriety involving political leaders, including Soren.

Shibu Soren, popularly known as Guruji, was a towering figure in Jharkhand politics and a prominent tribal leader who played a decisive role in the creation of the state in 2000. His political journey spanned several decades, marked by grassroots mobilisation of Adivasi communities, advocacy for land rights, and a sustained struggle for social justice. For his supporters, the Padma Bhushan is a long-overdue recognition of his contribution to India’s federal and democratic framework.

However, the timing of the award has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties and political commentators. They argue that honouring Soren posthumously sits uneasily with the government’s earlier stance, particularly in light of the memorandum submitted to the President that alleged the presence of “tainted” individuals in public office. Critics see this as an example of political inconsistency, questioning whether standards of accountability are applied selectively depending on political convenience.

The government, on its part, has maintained that civilian honours such as the Padma awards are conferred for lifetime contributions to society and the nation, independent of ongoing political rivalries or past allegations. Supporters of the decision argue that Shibu Soren’s role in empowering marginalised tribal communities, shaping Jharkhand’s political identity, and strengthening democratic participation merits recognition beyond partisan considerations.

Political analysts note that the episode reflects a broader pattern in Indian politics, where historical figures are often reassessed through changing political lenses. While controversies and allegations form part of many long political careers, posthumous honours are frequently used to acknowledge enduring legacies rather than unresolved disputes.

The Padma Bhushan for Shibu Soren thus stands at the intersection of recognition and controversy. For his followers, it is a symbolic closure that affirms his place in India’s political history. For critics, it raises uncomfortable questions about consistency, credibility, and the moral messaging of the state.

Ultimately, the award underscores a familiar paradox in Indian public life: the coexistence of reverence and reproach for the same political figure. As debates continue, Shibu Soren’s legacy—shaped by both his achievements and controversies—will remain a subject of public scrutiny and historical evaluation.
