Union Minister J.P. Nadda assures Telangana of adequate urea supply for Kharif season

Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Jagat Prakash Nadda on Wednesday met with a delegation led by Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to discuss the availability of fertilizers in the state, particularly the supply of urea during the peak Kharif season.

Chief Minister Reddy requested an uninterrupted supply of urea for the months of July and August, citing the heightened demand from farmers during the ongoing sowing period. In response, Minister Nadda assured full support to meet the state’s genuine agricultural requirements and directed officials from the Department of Fertilizers to ensure timely supplies as per demand.

However, the Union Minister expressed concern over the excessive consumption of urea in Telangana. Urea sales during Rabi 2024–25 were up 21% compared to the previous season, while Kharif 2025 has already witnessed a 12.4% increase in usage compared to the same period last year. He warned that such overuse is detrimental to soil health in the long term.

Rajat Kumar Mishra, Secretary, Department of Fertilizers, highlighted the PM PRANAM scheme, which incentivizes states to reduce chemical fertilizer usage and promote sustainable practices, including the adoption of organic and alternative fertilizers. He also urged state officials to take strict action against urea diversion for non-agricultural uses and ensure equitable distribution across districts.

The meeting was attended by MPs Mallu Ravi and Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy, A.P. Jithender Reddy, Special Representative of Telangana in New Delhi, and senior officials from both the Centre and the Telangana government.
